Changes!!!

We have started a new science unit called "Changes."  This unit reviews the states of matter, and offers experiments in physical and chemical reactions.

In the beginning of the unit, we investigated the properties of Solids, Liquids and Gases.  We studied what the atoms are doing inside each state.  We made this flip book to keep track of our learning.

First, up physical reactions.  First, we mixed 2 solids together.  We wanted to see how they would react and if we could separate them to their original state.  First we examined the two solids (gravel and kosher salt).

We followed the steps of the scientific method to conduct our experiment.

We mixed them together to see what would happen.

We could see the salt settled to the bottom of the cup.  We discussed ways to separate the solids.

Enter our 'tool' - the sieve.  We used mesh and a rubber band to build a tool that would sift the salt out and leave the gravel in the cup.

We could see how useful a sieve is to separate solids when they are mixed together.  Next up.....mixing solids and liquids!
