Maps and Globes

During December, Ms. Scott is teaching a unit on Maps and Globes.  It is an exciting unit where students get to create different kinds of maps.  We started the unit, by looking at the 'perspective' of a map.  It is a bird's eye view of a place.

We talked about how this a frontal view of a park.

And if I start to go higher in the air, as if flying in a hot air balloon.....my perspective of the park changes.

We practiced making a frontal view of our caddy, and a bird's eye view of our caddy.

Then, we started moving into making a classroom map.  This is harder to do than it seems!  The kids really had to think about where things were in the classroom.  We started with the permanent parts, the walls, windows, doors, etc...

Then, we created a legend, and added the details of our map, tables, chairs, etc....

Next up, we will create compasses and learn more about cardinal directions.
