Cartograhpers in Action!

We have been busy working on maps.  We started before Winter Break, but didn't finish all our investigation into how maps are made, and all their important features.  We learned what all maps should have (A title, a legend, compass, and scale) in order to be a good map.  We have looked at the history of map making, and also investigated a Portland map to practice our map reading skills.

Next on our agenda, the kids will create and design their own island map.  Their island will have to have certain geological features, and it will be the student's job to communicate what their island looks like with their map.  I am excited about the project and can't wait to post pictures.

Here we are coloring in the Williamette and Columbia Rivers.

Then we talked about the different quadrants of Portland (SE, SW, NE, NW, N).....the kids shaded in each section of Portland so we could visually see how our city is laid out.

Next, we figured out the scale on our map.  We measured the distance between specific spots in town to see how far apart things really are in Portland.  Did you know that Forrest Park is over 7 miles long!!!
