FIrst week goodies!

It is hard to believe we just started last week.  In some ways, it feels like we have been back in class much longer.  Maybe, it is just because the kids have done such a good job learning our routines!!!!

Here is a quick look at the some of the things we have been working on.

In Math, we have been studying patterns.  The students already had a lot of knowledge about how to make a pattern, but we are learning how to demonstrate what we know by drawing, labeling and writing about them.  This week, we have practiced how to make an entry into our Math Journal.  It is something we will do all year.

Here we are working on patters.  There are 2 kinds of patterns....repeating and growing.  A repeating pattern does just what it says, the same thing repeats over and over.  For example,.....A B A B A B.  The "A" and the "B" repeat over and over.

A growing pattern is where something grows by the same interval each time.  An example looks like this...2, 4, 8, 16, 32....this pattern grows by double each time.....numbers are not repeated, they increase.

Growing pattern!!!!

We also did some Name Art to decorate our space!

Also, in math, we have been working on our telling time skills.  We are in the middle of building our own clocks.

We have divided our clocks into quarters to help us understand how time works.

Our clocks have a special "back."  If you lift the flap, you can see how many minutes have gone by.  We will use this to help us tell time to the minute.

We use our clocks to play several partner games.

We also have been studying the brain and how it works. This is connected to MindUp, which is our new character education program.  We try to understand why people do, say and think they way they do.  We are working with kids on being "mindful" and "aware" of what their brain is doing.  This is very new, and so far, the kids are very interested in what we are learning.  We are tying MindUp into a science study of the brain and how it works.  Very exciting stuff!

This is our study of the left and right sides of our brain.  We will do so much more, this is only the beginning.

I can't believe that we have done so much in one week!!!!  These children are amazing!
