Alternative Seating

Hello All,

I am so excited to show you some new things in our classroom....Check it out!!!!

Andrea Wilson and family donated 5 yoga balls to our classroom.  I have used yoga balls instead of chairs in the past and have found them to be a wonderful addition to the classroom.  Sitting on the yoga balls helps children develop better core and back strength and helps with balance.  But, what I notice, is that kids are "focused" when they do their class work on them.  They are able to move their bodies a little bit which helps their minds really tune into the classwork that they are doing.  In many cases, children finish work faster and have better quality of work.

I have had entire classes sit on yoga balls, and found the only issue is the lack of space!  Which in our classroom at Arleta is not an issue.  We are so lucky that have  large classroom!

We have discussed the rules of sitting on the yoga balls (feet flat on the floor, little bounces, etc).  Each student understands that it is a privilege to sit on them.  We discussed how to take care of them and how to prevent them from popping (they will pop).....the students understand it is their job to take care of them.

Right now, I only have 5 balls, one for each table group.  The tables are rotating the balls so each person will get to sit on it about once a week (give or take).  I plan on purchasing more yoga balls and eventually have only yoga balls as chairs.  The yoga balls are about $10.00.  If there are any families out there that would like to donate money, we would gladly accept it and put it toward our yoga ball fund.  We would even take a used yoga ball that you don't use anymore) we would gladly take them off your hands!
