Homework 3/1

Due March 7

Goal: Write a goal that supports your learning this week.

Goal Evaluation: Write a sentence or two explaining how you did on your goal.

Math

This week, focus on the x4 and x8 facts. Just try to integrate your practice in different areas of your day.

We are continuing our discussions of fractions. Remember, the most important thing to remember is “What is the whole?”

Lucy and her brother Bob were eating sandwiches at a picnic. The sandwiches were all the same size. Lucy ate 1/2 of a peanut butter sandwich and 1/4 of an egg salad sandwich. Bob ate 1/4 of a tuna sandwich and 3/4 of a turkey sandwich. Who ate more, Lucy or Bob? Explain how you know using pictures, numbers, and/or words.

Spelling: (words come home Thursday)

A homophone is a word that sounds exactly like another word, but has a different spelling and a different meaning. (There are 11 words this week to study)

to

too

two

week

weak

our

hour

stair

stare

flour

flower

Challenge Words

their

there

they're

weather

whether

Choose 2 sets of homophones, write a sentence using the word, but use a blank instead of the word. I will try to figure out which homophone goes in the blank. Make sure you give me clues as to which word you want me to use!

Reading:

This week has been all about the newspaper. We each wrote a newspaper article about the Portland Fire of 1873.

The newspaper is a type of non-fiction reading material. Another one is a magazine. Do you get magazines at your house? Tell me which ones you get, and what information you find in them. If you do not get magazines at your house, what kind of magazine do you THINK you would like to read. What information would you want to be included in it. You could even make up a magazine title!

Writing:

This past week, you have started an expository story in class. Now that you have started (and perhaps finished) your rough draft, what are the key facts that you want your reader to know about your topic.

For example, if you are writing about camping. You may want your reader to know how to set up a tent, how to start a fire, and how to cook food.
