Fraction Fun

We have been working on fractions as I am sure that you have seen from our last several homework journals. This unit has allowed the students to work with several different models of fractions. Here students are working on circular model, practicing breaking the fraction into 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, 1/8 and 1/12.

This model shows students working with fractions on a ruler.

We use several different models to help the students explore fractions and how we use them. In 3rd Grade, we expect that students can identify fractions, add fractions together, and also understand equivalent fractions (i.e. 1/2 = 2/4).

One way you can help at home is point out real world examples of fractions (i.e. cooking, measurement, time - 1/4 of an hour, money -3/4 of a dollar). It helps for children to see fractions in action!
