Dates to Remember
February 2 – Rice Rock Museum Field Trip
February 3 – No School
February 15 – Late Opening
We will have a Valentine’s Day party on February 14th. It is a build your own sundae party! You child may bring valentines (if they choose)…I will send home a class list next week.
Could you spare….
….some yogurt cups. We use them when we do art…the regular size ones work really well!
SUBTRACTION
In 3rd grade, we expect that students can will add and subtract 3 and 4 digit numbers by the end of the school year.
In order to do this, students must have a sense of PLACE VALUE (what each numeral in a number means; ex. In 236…the 2 stands for 200, the 3 stands for 30, and the 6 stands for 6 ones). This is important because if students understand place value, they can use different strategies for solving these problems in an efficient manner.
In truth, subtraction (with regrouping) is one of the hardest math skills at this level. MANY children struggle with this concept. Several parents have asked about it, and I can assure you that we are still working on it each and every week! On the back of the newsletter is a sample of strategies that we have used in class. I suggest practicing 2-3 problems at night, just to keep going over these with your child.
