Story Cubes

For the past 2 weeks, we have been working on our 2nd reading partnership of the year. This time, the students selected their own books. It was interesting watching the pairs negotiate which book to choose! Because they selected their own books, the kids were super motivated to read the book, and to conduct their reading discussion meetings. I could barely tear them away from their books.

When they were finished, the students worked on identifying the elements of a story....characters, setting, and plot. We also thought about our favorite part of the story and our recommendation for other readers.

We took all this information and worked on building our book project....

We built story cubes!!!! They were so much fun to make, and the kids had a wonderful time. We were all please with the final product.

After, we finished our cubes, we then prepared an oral book report to share our books with our classmates. It was the first time we have spoken in front of the class in a formal way. It was good practice for future speeches that will come up in the Spring.
