Mixing Solids

We discussed the properties of a solid, and how a solid's shape is constant. The atoms are so close together that they cannot be moved unless something is "done" to the solid (melted, crushed, etc)......so, we wanted to see about mixing solids and also how to separate that mixture.

Here we are examining our 2 solids.....salt and gravel.

Now, we simply mix the solids together and observe what happens. How do the 2 solids interact? Do they change?

Now to separate the solids. The students built a sieve using mesh and a rubber band, and were able to get back to the original 2 solids.
