Spelling Program

Mrs. Mauldin’s Class
Spelling Program

Each week a new spelling pattern will be introduced to your child in class.  Students will learn the “rules” associated with each new pattern and will take part in activities throughout the week to gain more exposure to the pattern.

When students take their spelling test, they will be tested on the 10 words that they have been studying at home, PLUS 5 additional words that follow the pattern, but have not been studied.

This tells us how well students can apply the spelling pattern to new words instead of only spelling words memorized for the test.  Research shows that this approach to spelling leads to more accurate spelling of words when students are composing their own pieces of writing.

In addition to the spelling pattern words, there will be 5 BONUS words that will be sent home to study.  These words will be pulled from science, social studies, and readings we are doing in class.  These words are meant to be difficult.

To recap:  each spelling test will have
10 words that your child has studied that fit a spelling pattern.
5 words they have not studied, but fit the spelling pattern.
    5 bonus words

Spelling words will be sent home on Thursdays.
Spelling tests will be given on Wednesdays.

Please note:  For this first week of school, our spelling words are ones that kids should know at our school.  They do not follow a pattern, but are used all the time!!!  We will start the actual spelling program next week.
